For their efforts this summer three Mayo players will pick up All Star awards at tonight’s banquet. The ever reliable Keith Higgins picked up his third All Star in a row for his displays this summer after being selected in the corner back position.
Colm Boyle won his second award in a row after another impressive summer from the Davitts man, he got the nod in the number seven jersey. The final Mayo player to pick up an All Star this year is Cillian O’Connor. The Ballintubber attacker was the championship’s top scorer and arguably should won an All Star last year to go with the two young footballer of the year awards he already has.
Mayo pair make Christy Ring Champions 15
Mayo duo Ciaran Charlton and David Kenny were both announced in the Champions 15 team, the All Star awards for the Ring, Rackard, and Meagher hurling championships. The duo who play their club hurling for Tooreen were a major part of Christy Phillips’ team this year that reached the semi-final of the competition where they lost out to Kerry in Castlebar. Mayo went on to win the Connacht intermediate championship later in the summer when they saw off Roscommon in the final in June.
‘Four Goal McGee’ to be introduced to Garda Sports Hall of Fame
Burrishoole’s Willie McGee, the man who famously scored four goals for the Mayo u21s in the 1967 All Ireland u21 final replay, will be awarded the Coiste Siamsa Hall of Fame Award for 2014 at the 21st annual Coiste Siamsa Garda Sportstar Awards which will be held at The Malton Hotel, Killarney, on Friday November 21. The awards are presented to Garda members who have achieved success in their chosen sporting areas, locally, nationally, and internationally. Willie McGee went on to win a Connacht title in 1969 and National League title in 1970. He is a retired detective superintendent.
