Swinford Fianna Fáil candidates selected

Three candidates have been selected by Fianna Fáil to contest the Local Elections this June in the Swinford electoral area in Mayo.

The sitting councillor Jimmy Maloney will be joined by John Caulfield and Michael Smyth in contesting the elections this June.

John Caulfield is a first-time candidate. He is a self-employed decorator. He is married to Mary and they have five children ranging in ages from 12 to 23. He has been involved in local politics since a young age and is heavily involved in drama and GAA. He is the assistant secretary of the Kilmovee GAA Club and chairman of Bord na nÓg. He is a community activist and is involved in community development.

Councillor Jimmy Maloney was first elected to Mayo County Council in 1991 and has been elected at every subsequent election. He was chairman of Mayo County Council from 2001/2002 and chairman of the BMW Regional Assembly from 2000/2001. He is a current member of the Western Regional Authority and of the North West Fisheries Board.

Michael Smyth is a first-time candidate. He runs his own solicitor firm in Swinford. He is a former Army officer with overseas experience in Lebanon and East Timor. He was chairman of the Swinford Chamber of Commerce for the past two years and is very involved in community development in the area. He is a former Mayo footballer and played for the county at every level. He was involved in the organisation of the recent Battle of the Bands competition that was held locally.
