Big winners around the county last weekend

Balla

Last weekend's competition was a stableford event sponsored by Tolster's Bar, Castlebar. The winner of the gents’ section, was James Waldron with a score of 37pts, Alan Brett finished in second place with Martin Vahey finishing in third. The ladies’ section was won by Rose O'Connor with a score of 39pts, Margaret Walsh finished in second one point behind and Nora Gibbons finished in third spot.

Balina

In last weekend’s singles competition, G Battle was the winner with a score of 44pts, he finished one point in front of P Prendergast, with D Flaherty coming home in third a point further behind him. The open Wednesday competition was claimed by Michael Howley who scored 33pts, with Stephen Casey taking second place a point behind. Ballina Golf Club has been granted Failte Ireland recognition and becomes one of only three Mayo clubs to hold this badge of approval. The club has come through a thorough inspection carried out by experienced tourism professionals and it was noted that Ballina is a well maintained course and that excellent work had been done to put systems, policies and procedures in place to assist with the day-to-day running of the golf club. The club’s Environmental Policy received special mention.

Ballinrobe

Last weekend’s gents’ competition was sponsored by the Anglers Rest in Headford and the winner was Dave Flemming with a score of 41pts, he finished two points in front of Paul O'Connor in second place, with James O'Gorman taking third place. The gross prize went to Michael C Burke, with the category win going to James Dooley, the front nine to Tom Treacy Jr and the back nine to Ger Coen.

The ladies’ competition, sponsored by Maria Doherty, Mary Nalty, and Helen King, was won by Joanne Comer with a score of 42pts, with category wins going to Aine Melville, Angela Finnerty and Angela Flaherty. The front nine was won by Aileen Tierney with Joanne Hynes taking the back nine win.

Ballyhaunis

Tom Phillips was the winner of the gents’ Phillips Menswear sponsored competition with a score of 42pts. He finished four points in front of Anthony Cunnane in second place, with Sean Solan coming home in third place. The ladies’ competition was won by Marietta Potgieter with a score of 38pts and Niamh Henry finishing in second place.

Castlebar

Last weekend’s club competition was won by Thomas Cresham with a score of 41pts. He finished two points in front of Shane Quigley in second place and Paddy Burke came home in third place. The junior cup supporters Am Am was won by the team of Conor McDonagh, Gerry Needham, Michael Grennan and Michael McGing with a score of 114pts. They finished ahead of Eamon Glancey's team in second place and Maurice Kerr's team in third spot.

Claremorris

Kevin Heneghan was the big winner in last Sunday's competition with a score of 43pts. The class one prize went to Paul Biggins, with Liam O'Connell taking class two, Gerry Kilkenny class three, and Tommy Hynes class four. The ladies’ competition was won by Riana Kean with Louise Grant finishing in second place and the nine hole win going to Mary Tuohy.

Swinford

In the Captain’s Prize, Declan Munnelly was the winner with a score of 65 nett. He finished in front of John Forkan in second place and Tony Mulligan in third place. There were category wins for Vincent Murtagh and TP Loftus, with Michael Rowley winning the front nine competition and Keith McHugh the back nine.

Last weekend’s ladies’ stableford competition was won by Siobhan King with a score of 38pts, with Julie Loftus finishing in second spot and Marian Thomburg finishing in third place.

Westport

Seamus Gill was the winner of the club competition with a fine score of 39pts. He finished just in front of Tim Coffey in second place with Declan Quinn taking third spot and Austin O'Toole coming home in fourth place. The coming weekend there will be a three-ball scramble and all players remaining in the Castlecourt Trophy are asked to finish their outstanding matches.
