Mayo County Council is to debate the procedure in relation to its receiving presentations from outside groups and organisations in the future.
The issue was raised by Independent councillor Frank Durcan at this week’s monthly meeting of the council. Cllr Durcan questioned the procedure for having presentations made to the council during the middle of their meetings due to the confined timeframe of the meetings themselves. He said, “We don’t have the time to deal with urgent business of the council at times.”
Independent councillor Michael Kilcoyne said all groups are entitled to make their case in front of the council and that is something that has to be maintained. Cllr Durcan said that the councillors were the representatives of the people and the different groups could come and talk to them individually or as a group outside the monthly meeting. Sinn Féin councillor Rose Conway Walsh suggested that in future all presentations not be taken until after 6pm at a meeting so that the business on the agenda could be got through by the council. It was agreed to have a item on an upcoming agenda to set out new procedures on the issue.
