Mayo venues open doors for Culture Night extravaganza

Some 23 free events have been planned in towns and villages across Mayo to celebrate Culture Night 2014 on September 19.

Culture Night is an national annual event, which sets aside one evening for groups, organisations, and venues to come together and showcase their cultural offerings to a large audience of locals and visitors.

Venues across Mayo have eagerly signed up for the event and are opening their doors en masse to deliver an unforgettable cultural experience over one evening in the county.

Culture Night is now in its sixth year in Mayo and is organised by the Department of Arts, Heritage, and the Gaeltacht in partnership with Mayo County Council.

Events have been planned for Achill, Ballina, Ballinrobe, Ballintubber, Ballycastle, Ballycroy, Belmullet, Bohola, Ceathrú Thaidhg, Castlebar, Claremorris, Laherdane, Louisburgh, Tuar Mhic Éadaigh, Turlough, and Westport.

Some of the many highlights of Culture Night in Mayo include a ‘Culture Crawl’ in Achill; a courtyard céilé in Ballina; a family storytelling session in Belmullet; a choral showcase in Castlebar; an open exhibition in Claremorris; and blacksmithing in Lahardane.

“This year Mayo is hoping to build on the success of last year’s event by continuing to provide an evening of interesting events for Mayo people to attend and enjoy,” said a spokesperson from the Mayo County Council Arts Office.

“Regardless of where you are in the county there will be a Culture Night event taking place nearby.

“Imagination and creativity are abundantly apparent in the excellent programmes that have made past Culture Nights extremely successful and 2014 will not disappoint.”
