Gardaí responded to knife incident at Ballina school this morning

Local gardaí and an armed response unit were called to a Ballina school this morning following reports of a woman in possession of a knife engaged in a confrontation with the school's principal. 

Ballina gardaí and the regional response unit repsonded to the call about a confrontation, involving a knife, at St Muredach's College, Ballina, at 9.30 am.

The woman was engaged in a confrontation with the school principal. 

Inspector Tom Calvey, Ballina, told the Mayo Advertiser this afternoon that nobody was harmed during the incident. 

Local gardaí responding to the incident called the regional support unit, an armed unit based in Claremorris, which is standard protocol for an incident of this nature involving a weapon, such as a knife. 

The woman was arrested and conveyed to Ballina Garda Station. She has since been released and investigations are ongoing.

Inspector Calvey said there were no students in the vicinity of the confrontation. 

The woman was not a parent of a student at the school.
