Golfing results from around the county

There was lots of golfing action taking place around the county last weekend. Here are some of the results recorded.

Ballina

The latest open week results from Ballina Golf Club are as follows.

J McManus 40; J Kennedy 38;  F Fahey 34; J Murphy 39;  J Forkin 34;  S O’Boyle 33; D Fox 42; J Forkin 42;  J McManus 40.

 In the coming week Lady President Phil Cronin's Prize will be played on Sunday, preceded by a three ball fun scramble.

Club President Paddy Galvin's Prize will be played on Sunday, August 31.

Plans are also well advanced at the club for hosting the 2014 Connaught Veterans’ Open in early September.

The prestigious competition was previously hosted by the club in 2006 and is open to golfers over 65 years of age.

On this occasion, it will feature golfers from Britain, Germany, Sweden, and from many clubs throughout Ireland along with a number of local stalwarts.

Ballyhaunis

The latest results from Ballyhaunis Golf Club are as follows.

Ladies: 1st Norrie Dillon (19 ) 74; 2nd Kay Buckley (18 ) 75 (back 9 ).

Gents results: 1st Pat Freeley(11 ) 67; 2nd Willie Coyne (18 ) 68 (back 9 ); Gross Tom Moran (4 ) 77.

Best Junior: Liam Foody (21 ) 63 nett.

Balla

The results of the stableford competition, played between August 15 and 17 and sponsored by Balla Town Parks, are as follows.

Mens: 1st Gus Heraty 38; 2nd P.J.Brett 35 points (back 9 ); 3rd Adrian O'Connell 35.

Ladies: 1st Aine McSuibhne 36; 2nd Breege Jennings 34 (back 9 ); 3rd Carmel Henry 34 (back 6 ).

Castlebar

The results of the weekend competition from August 16 and 17, sponsored by Master Lifts, are as follows.

Mens: 1st Paul Kilcourse 65; 2nd Martin Newcombe 67; Gross Ken Irwin 73; 3rd Tom Cresham 67.

Ladies: 1st Teresa Mannion 72; 2nd Brigid Toher 73; Gross Lorna Irwin 81; 3rd Dympna Smith 76

Westport

Larry Hingerton’s President’s Prize was played n August 17. The results are as follows.

1st Bill Hopkins (18 ) 69; 2nd Padraig McLoughlin (12 ) 71; Gross Tony Bree ( 5 ) 72; 3rd Harry Gillivan (3 ) 77; 4th Ray Moran (19 ) 72; Cat. 1 Des Mahon (8 ) 74; Cat. 2 Paul Moore (13 ) 73; Cat. 3 Gerry Moran (19 ) 74; Cat. 4 Willie Elliott (21 ) 73; Juniors Jack O’Donnell (4 ) 77; Boys Oisin Mallon (24 ) 22.

An honorable mention goes to Michael Cullingworth, who played one shot for each of his daughters on the 15th in very windy conditions in the President’s Prize. He has three daughters!

Thursday next will be the end-of-season nine hole social mixed competition.

Anybody wishing to play, especially those who have not yet played in the event, is invited to put their names on the timesheet, which is on the notice board in the clubhouse.

Mulranny

Eugene Patten Jnr played the round of his life at blustery Mulranny on Sunday, when shooting an excellent 65 to capture Freddie Devaney’s President’s Prize.   

President Freddie congratulated Eugene on his fantastic performance and all the other prize winners and thanked all who made the day such a memorable occasion.  

The full results from the competition are as follows.

1st  Eugene Patten Jnr.  65; 2nd Tom Mulloy 68; Gross Fergus Rothwell 77; 3rd  Richard Keane 71; 4th  Thomas Gallagher 72; 5th Denis Gallagher 73; 6th Christy McDonnell 73.                

Ladies:  1st Mary Joyce 20; 2nd Patsy Mulchrone 18; 3rd Maureen Walsh 15.

Visitors: 1st Mary Mulchrone, 2nd Maura Rochford.   

The race for the Golfer of the Year, with one competition remaining, appears to rest between Richard Keane and Martin O’Carroll with John Joyce and Tom Duffy still in with an outside chance.

Next weekend’s stableford competition is sponsored by Dr Jerry Cowley, Mulranny. Best wishes to Margaret Moran for her Lady President’s Day on Saturday.  

A 9 holes competition for men will commence at 3.30 pm.

Claremorris

The results of the Glynn’s Homevalue sponsored competition are as follows.

1st Alan Feerick 41; Class 1 James Lyons 35; Class 2 Conor McGuinness 43; Class 3 Noel Grier 38; Class 4 Peter Hynes 32 points (back 3 ).

Ladies: 1st Yvonne Oldham 34; 2nd Noreen McHugh 33.

Ladies 9-hole: 1st Margaret Flannery 18.
