Bernie Johnson’s volunteering spirit helps Oxfam campaigns worldwide

A Castlebar woman has been volunteering at her local Oxfam shop for an impressive 12 years.

Bernie Johnson started volunteering at the shop, which raises money for aid work in developing and crisis hit countries, when it first opened its doors well over a decade ago and she has relished her volunteering role ever since.

“I really enjoy it,” she enthused. “The work is varied - from sorting stock to dressing windows - and every day is different. It’s also rewarding, knowing that you’ve made a difference. On top of all that, it’s fun,” she added.

Catherine Cunniffe is the shop manager.

She said the shop stocks a vast selection of good quality clothes and accessories as well as the Oxfam Baby range.

“We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to join our team, dealing with customers and helping to sort and price men and women’s clothes and donations, as well as putting their creative stamp on our in-store displays,” said Ms Cunniffe.

The Oxfam shops helps to raise vital funds for emergency responses such as the current crisis in South Sudan, development projects and campaigns. The shops also offer volunteers the opportunity to learn new skills.

Volunteers receive training and would ideally be available for a two- to four-hour shift, once a week.
