Housing adaptation funding welcomed by Ring and Mulherin

The announcement that €304,088 has been allocated to Mayo County Council by the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government for housing adaptations for tenants with disabilities has been warmly welcomed by both Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring and Michelle Mulherin TD.

Minister Ring stated: “This funding will enable Mayo County Council to carry out improvements to social housing units around the county. These adaptations will enhance accessibility in social housing and improve the living conditions for those who reside in these houses.”

Deputy Mulherin said: “In all cases across the country, allocations have been made for the full amount sought up to €300,000. In cases where more than €300,000 was requested, additional funds were granted on a pro-rata basis. Thousands of people are living in local authority housing in Mayo and many of these have disabilities. We need to ensure that the people of the locality are living in homes that are fit for purpose and this funding will go a long way towards making the improvements required.”

She went on to say: “Where new houses can’t be identified for tenants with disabilities, we must do everything we can to ensure that their houses are more suitable for them to live in and that is what this funding is intended to do. It is important that we continue to work to make Mayo a better place for people to live. Funding such as this is essential in raising the standard of living for all people in the community. The provision of housing is a priority for this Government. As well as building new homes, it is vital that we upgrade the houses where people are already living. This funding is very welcome and I am confident it will make a big difference to many people in Mayo.”

The funding is part an overall €8 million fund announced by the Department of the Environment for the purpose of adaptations / extensions to social houses to meet the needs of tenants who have a disability.
