Run in the first Westport marathon next Thursday

Breakthrough Cancer Research is calling on people to join the first Westport Run on Thursday August 21. The run is part of an All-Ireland triathlon record attempt by two men who are trying to raise €500k for cancer research.

James Colbert and Sean Buckley from Cork will have completed an incredible 120km swim of the River Shannon and a cycle through every county in Ireland, before taking on four marathons, one in each province, all in 22 days.

They chose Westport for the Connacht marathon as they felt the town would really get behind such an initiative as it would be the first time a marathon had ever take place in Westport, and also because of the incredible scenery along the route.

The run will go through the historic town and along the Great Western Greenway.

Organisers are hoping that members of the public will join the team for part of the run and registration is still open for 5km, 10km, 21km, or full marathon distances, with staggered start times depending on the distance undertaken (3pm for full marathon, 5.30pm for half marathon, 6.45pm, for 10k and 7.15pm for 5k ). The full 42km marathon costs €80, the half marathon which is 21km long costs €50 to enter, the 10km run has a €25 entry fee, while the 5km run costs €20.

If you cannot run on the day, you can go out to show your support and Breakthrough Cancer Research is appealing to everyone to make a donation to this great cause by visiting www.endurancechallenge.ie, www.justgiving.com, or simply texting BCR to 50300 to donate just €4 to Breakthrough Cancer Research.
