Last month saw Ireland West International Airport Knock break records as it recorded its busiest month at the regional airport. More than 91,000 passengers used the airport in July, which was 1,500 more than the previous record for the Mayo based airport which was set in August 2012 when 89,500 passed through the arrivals and departure gates of the airport.
The passenger traffic to and from the airport from the UK was up by 17 per cent on the same month last year, while traffic from continental Europe was up by 18 per cent on the same time last year. The airport announced that all of the airport’s airline partners, Flybe, Aer Lingus, Ryanair, and Germanwings showed an increase in passenger numbers and higher load factors compared to July 2013.
The numbers of passengers using the airport this year so far shows that the airport is on track to have its busiest 12 month period with passenger numbers using Ireland West International Airport Knock expected to reach the 700,000 mark for the first time in the airport’s history since it officially opened its doors in May 1986.
Speaking about the record month for the airport, Joe Gilmore, managing director of Ireland West Airport Knock, said: “We are delighted to have recorded our busiest month in the airport’s history, which is an endorsement for the range of destinations, ease of access, and convenience of the airport for the people of the region and for those overseas visitors who want to fly directly into the heart of the west of Ireland. These passenger figures highlight the importance of the airport for the regions in which we serve and how with support from regional stakeholders the airport can continue to grow and develop essential international connectivity that will lead to more jobs and prosperity for the people of the west and northwest of Ireland.”
