Intermediate quarter-finals pulled days before throw-in

The four Egan Jewellers Intermediate Football Championships quarter-finals that were down for decision over this weekend were postponed on Wednesday evening by the county board following discussions with Mayo senior team manager James Horan.

Mayo GAA PRO Aiden McLoughlin released a statement on Wednesday evening announcing the news when he stated: “A proposal from the senior team manager had been considered and agreed and is as follows. The Intermediate quarter finals will now take place on Saturday (and Sunday ) of August 30 and 31 and the eight participating teams will have their players released to them in the week leading up to the games. We regret the position regarding the coming weekend but taking all matters into account we have agreed to the proposal to try our best to be fair to all involved.”

On Saturday evening Kiltimagh and Ballyhaunis and Swinford and Hollymount-Carramore were due to meet in a double header in Elverys MacHale Park, with Mayo Gaels and Belmullet due to meet in James Stephens Park in Ballina at 7pm. On Sunday, at 3.30pm Kilmaine and The Neale were due to meet in the all south Mayo clash in Ballinrobe.

A number of players in the Mayo senior and minor panels would have been involved in the action over the weekend, with Keith Higgins (Ballyhaunis ) and Chris Barrett (Belmullet ) both starting last weekend’s All Ireland Senior quarter final win over Cork in Croke Park, with Darren Coen (Hollymount-Carramore ) and Adam Gallagher (Mayo Gaels ) also part of the senior set-up. In the minor team Belmullet duo Eoin O’Donoghue and Gary Boylan started the game as did Kiltimagh pair Jason Forkan and TJ Byrne.
