The Mayo ladies senior footballers enter the All Ireland series tomorrow when they head to Pearse Park in Longford to take on Westmeath in round two of the championship.
Peter Clarke’s ladies were beaten in the Connacht final by Galway in Elverys MacHale Park just over a month ago when the Tribeswomen ran out 1-16 to 1-12 winners.
Their opponents tomorrow were well beaten by Dublin in the Lenister semi-final with the metropolitans winning well. Westmeath got back on the wagon with a win over Clare in round one of the All Ireland series in recent times. The Lakeside girls reached the final of division two of the league this year when they were beaten by Galway 3-10 to 0-9 back in May and have been making steady progress under Martin Flanagan.
For Mayo on Saturday, they will be looking to Cora Staunton to once again spearhead their attack, the Carancon ace kicked 11 of Mayo’s 12 points in the Connacht final defeat, but Peter Clarke will be looking to get more returns from his other attackers in Longford. Deirdre Doherty, Fiona McHale, Grace Kelly, and Anna Tuhoy will be expected to chip in with a few more scores each. Mayo still boast plenty of experience throughout their team with Yvonne Byrne one of the best in the business between the sticks, while Helena Lohan, Martha Carter, and Claire Egan have been there and done it all before for club and county, and will be expected to step up to the plate and deliver again for Mayo.
Mayo will need to keep tabs on Fiona Leaveay, Maud Foley, and Ruth Kearney who have all shown well for Westmeath this year.
