Next Friday, August 15, from 11am to 1pm the museum will host a Knitting: Not Just for Nanas drop in event. Start a new project or get help finishing an old one. Learn a new skill for life. Holiday makers and beginners welcome. No booking required. This event is suitable from seven years and up.
On Sunday August 17 from 3pm to 4.30pm, a talk called The Crazy Life of Birds will take place. What have a dinosaur and chicken got in common? How do birds sleep while flying? What is the size of the smallest bird’s egg in the world? Guess how much a robin weighs? Join the talk for birdy facts and fun led by Mick Hogan, marine and countryside guide. Booking is required and the talk is suitable for adults and children from seven years up.
Heritage Week takes place from Saturday August 23 to Saturday August 30. Kicking things off on Saturday August 23 between 3pm and 4pm will be a performance called Remember Delia Murphy in Story and Song, the songs, story, and family pictures of the iconic Delia Murphy of The Spinning Wheel fame, presented and performed by Delia’s niece Carmen Cullen. With musical accompaniment by Gerry Anderson and a reading from Carmen’s new novel Two Sisters Singing, it sets the scene of 1940s Ireland. This event is for adults only and booking is required.
On Saturday August 30 it is time for Hoof It!, the annual donkey day. The team from Sathya Sai the donkey sanctuary in Sligo and The Mayo Donkey Sanctuary in Kiltimagh are back. Go along, meet the donkeys, and watch hoof trimming and feeding demonstrations. Lots to do and see for all of the family. No booking is required.
Preserving the Peace: Policing on the Island of Ireland 1814-2011 temporary exhibition continues in the museum. The Peace Preservation Act of 1814 was passed to create the Peace Preservation Force. The PPF is seen by many as the precursor of the Irish Constabulary, the Royal Irish Constabulary, and of the modern police services on the island of Ireland. To mark this bicentenary, the National Museum of Ireland-Country Life has developed Preserving the Peace - an exhibition dedicated to Irish policing. From the initial crime to capture and punishment - both corporal and capital - Preserving the Peace opens a door onto the sometimes uncomfortable reality of Ireland’s official past. The exhibition will run until Easter 2015.
On Sight is an annual installation of artworks in and around the grounds of Turlough Park. This year sees the installation of 13 artworks. The theme for On Sight 2014 is ‘Traditional Farmhouse Fare – Farm to Plate’. This artist led exhibition project is a collaboration of the National Museum of Ireland, Mayo County Council, and Mayo Arts Squad. It involves a number of independent artists, the Rural Training Centre Castlebar, Luisne Arts Group Ballinrobe, and the intercultural refugee group in Ballyhaunis. This exhibition will run until end of summer 2015.
