Kiltimagh brown bread tingles tastebuds in New York

Everyone thinks their own mammy’s brown bread recipe is best.

Well one Dubliner with a strong Kiltimagh connection is so sure of it that he is serving the family recipe up at a trendy New York bar and restaurant.

James Morrissey (27 ) is the grandson of the late May Morrissey, who lived on James Street, Kiltimagh. His father James grew up in Kiltimagh.

Now Mr Morrissey has opened The Late Late Bar & Spirit Grocer in Manhatten on East Houston Street in New York’s Lower East Side in Manhatten.

Mr Morrissey started baking his own brown bread for the restaurant, based on Mrs Morrissey’s recipe, and it has been going down a storm with Big Apple customers.

“My grandmother made all her own jams and marmalades and grew a year-round supply of potatoes and vegetables. Everything was so organic and wholesome. That is exactly what a cosmopolitan community like New York is looking for,” explained Mr Morrissey.

Mr Morrissey is also looking forward to further developing the links between Kiltimagh and his bar.

“My grandparents also kept bees in their back garden and I plan to use west of Ireland honey for some of the new cocktail drinks we are offering,” he outlined.

Congratulations and the best of luck from all at the Mayo Advertiser to Mr Morrissey in his new business venture.
