‘Problem estates’ being tackled

Mayo County Council has made sweeping progress in tackling the problem of unfinished housing estates.

Three years ago, a survey of housing estates in the county showed there were 125 unfinished developments.

That figure has now been halved, outlined senior planner with Mayo County Council, Iain Douglas, at a recent Ballina Municipal Area meeting.

Work is ongoing to resolve the problems at the remaining unfinished estates, including calling in developers’ bonds, seizing cash deposits and, where necessary, instigating court action.
