Summer series gets under way at Mayo AC

The Mayo Athletic Club have opened its summer 5k series.

The series kicked off in Ballyhaunis last week when 193 runners set out in temperatures exceeding 21 degrees at 8pm to complete the first leg of the five-week programme.

The second race in the series took place on Tuesday in tough, humid conditions at Lough Lannagh in Castlebar.

The series is a unique running event suited to novices and more experienced runners with all races starting at 8 pm each Tuesday over the five weeks.

Conor Dolan, of the Galway City Harriers, has won both of the races run so far, finishing on a time of 16:16 in Ballyhaunis and 16:39 in Castlebar.

Move2Improve

The second race in the Mayo AC Move2Improve Series, sponsored by C&C Cellular, takes place this Sunday (June 29 ) at noon in Irishtown.

The 8k will be held in memory of Padraic Cullina, former secretary of Mayo AC.

The race is an accurately measured course with AAI permit. Participants will have another opportunity to win points at three Move2Improve levels and add to those won in the first event at Kilmovee or get on the points tables for the first time.

The fee is €15 or €5 for juniors. Children race at 11.15am.

Registration will be at the community centre in Irishtown from 10 am and refreshments will be available there after the event.

All proceeds will go to Western Alzheimers. All are welcome to run, jog, or walk.
