A 31-year-old man from Knock who was caught smoking heroin in the vicinity of a petrol station in Castlebar was told that he “only looks after number one” by Judge Mary Devins at Wednesday’s sitting of Castlebar Court.
The case of Jamie Robinson, 20 Carromore Drive, Knock, which was heard in November 2008, was adjourned until this week’s sitting for a probation report and the determination of whether the defendant had any other convictions in the UK.
Judge Mary Devins was informed by Inspector Mick Murray that the investigation into previous convictions was not available as of yet, however, Robinson told the court he had previous convictions in the UK.
The defendant also outlined to the court that he was once heavily involved in the drug scene in the UK, however after moving to Ireland in February of last year, that he had not used heroin until the day he was detected smoking it outside the Corrib Oil filling station in Castlebar in April 2008.
Robinson said that after returning to the UK to accompany his girlfriend to visit her sick father he caught up with friends and purchased the drug, which “was a stupid thing to do”.
Judge Devins told the defendant that after reading his probation report she was of the opinion that he was a “self serving”, “callous”, “reckless” person who only cared about himself. Judge Devins said that his outline of “a mission of mercy” to the UK and the reckless behaviour which led him to smoke heroin in public at 2pm, along with the fact that three of his four children were being looked after in the UK, made it all the more evident that Robinson “looks after number one”. The judge adjourned sentencing to April 1.
