Mayo Mountain Rescue Team were involved in a successful search for four missing Dutch tourists on New Year’s day who had become lost while walking the Letterkeen Loop walking trail in the Nephin Beg Mountain Range in North Mayo.
The team were alerted by gardaí who had been contacted by the missing party shortly before 5pm. The tourists had experienced difficulty finding trail markers and, as darkness descended, had decided to retrace their route.
Mayo mountain rescue team arrived at the trail head at approximately 6.45pm and dispatched a number of search teams. The tourists were located at approximately 7.25pm, about 30 minutes from the trail head. While all were cold and tired and hungry none of the party had sustained any injuries and had been relatively well equipped for the conditions with adequate clothing, footwear, and torches. They were guided back to the trail head by the Mayo mountain rescue team search party.
