German travel programme to promote Mayo

A million German TV viewers will be introduced to one of Mayo's top tourism destinations when a travel documentary on the Wild Atlantic Way is screened there next month.

A crew from national German TV network, ARD, were in Westport last week filming for the programme Weltreisen (World Travel ).

The programme will air in July and will reach an estimated one million viewers across Germany.

Germany is one of Ireland's most important tourism markets and 2013 was a record year for German visitors to the country.

Zoe Redmond, Tourism Ireland's manager for Central Europe, said they are carrying out an extensive programme of promotional activity throughout 2014 to keep the momentum going and build on that growth.

“We are placing a major focus on the Wild Atlantic Way, which we know has tremendous appeal for German holidaymakers,” she said.
