Literary festival, Erris Festival of Words

Aras Inis Gluaire, Belmullet, Friday to Sunday

The inaugural Erris Festival of Words this weekend will see an impressive line-up of leading Irish and internationally acclaimed literary names deliver readings, poetry recitals, workshops, debate and talks in Belmullet from Friday to Sunday.

Visual art, Daisies (Vale of Tears )

Custom House Studios, Westport, continues until June 29

A new exhibition of work by Sheena Graham-George opened in the Custom House Studios, Westport, last night (Thursday ), and continues until June 29.

The exhibition is inspired by Celtic and Christian myths and folklore associated with the daisy flower.

The work is part of the Cilliní project, a poignant collection of work remembering the thousands of babies buried in unmarked burial grounds throughout Ireland.

Music, Sarah McQuaid

Ballina Arts Centre, Saturday

Rising star Sarah McQuaid, whose voice has been likened “honey poured into wine”, performs in the Ballina Arts Centre tomorrow at 8pm.

The singer and guitarist’s third solo album The Plum Tree and the Rose has won critical acclaim, both at home and abroad.

Tickets cost €15 and €12.

Family activity, drumming playshop and sound journey

Explore the basics of rhythm and music with your child at a drumming playshop with Lukasz Krzywon and Kasia Slabon in the Linenhall Arts Centre tomorrow morning from 11.30am to 1pm.

Film, Edge of Tomorrow

Tom Cruise’s latest action offering Edge of Tomorrow is getting some top reviews and is playing in local cinemas now.

Described as Groundhog Day meets Independence Day, the action is set in the near future when Cruise’s character Lt Col Bill Cage, an officer in the midst of a world army force versus alien invader battle gets stuck in a time loop and has to relive the fight again and again until he can save the Earth.

Aghamore GAA is holding a fundraising table quiz in Carty’s Bar in Knock tonight at 9pm.

The quiz will raise funds for Bord na nÓg. First prize is €100.
