There’s rarely any solid guarantee of a sunny weekend in Mayo but this one’s an exception.
Teams of volunteers will be out in force all over the county today and tomorrow (Friday and Saturday ) selling pins for Sunflower Day, the annual fundraiser for local hospice services.
While you can’t bank on the weather, you can be sure the splash of cheerful yellow on lapels the length and breadth of the county will make it a bright one here in Mayo.
The sunflower pins will be on sale at various outlets and all funds raised on the day go to Mayo Roscommon Hospice.
This year, for the first time, Mayo Roscommon Hospice has also introduced a ‘donate by text’ option.
People can simply text SFD (be sure to use all capital letters ) to 50300 and donate €4 to the charity.
“Buying a sunflower over the weekend is of so much importance to our foundation,” said community development officer with Mayo Roscommon Hospice, Lorraine Toner. “It is one of our main fundraising events and we are always blown away by the kindness and support shown by the public when it comes to hospice.
“We even had Ronan O’Gara texting from Paris to 50300 as he is not around to buy one off the street!” she added.
