The Westport United juggernaut continues to rumble through the Elvery’s Sports Super League. This weekend the league will see a third of the games completed and the Coveys are on what looks like an unstoppable roll, with five wins from five so far and 26 goals scored. On Saturday evening it looks like a dead cert that they will make it six from six when they host bottom of the table Iorras Aontaithe in the Sports Park at 7pm.
Last weekend saw Westport United play two games in three days and score 16 more goals, putting four past a previously unbeaten Ballyheane in the league and an amazing 12 in the back of Straide and Foxford United B’s goal in the cup.
The win over Ballyheane not only once again marked out United’s dominance at this level, but brought to an end Ballyheane unbeaten Super League run that stretched back to the start of the 2013 season.
While Westport United were keeping their winning run up, Castlebar Celtic were brought crashing back to earth, when Moy Villa came to Celtic Park and went home with a 2-1 win over the home team. This win was on that nobody could have really seen coming, the Attymass outfit have been a solid side in the Super League so far this year, but beating one of the perceived big guns at home to pick up their second win of the season was not something many expected to see. Daniel Moyles put Moy Villa into the lead and even though Gerard O’Boyle leveled the game up after 50 minutes, it was the visitors who pushed on for victory with John Durkan finishing from a Barry Molloy cross. Despite piling on the pressure, Celtic couldn’t force the goal they needed and slumped to their second defeat of the season.
Not that all is lost, because bar Westport United out in front of everyone else there are seven of the 10 teams in the league bunched within five points of each other, from ninth placed Fahy Rovers on five points right up to second placed Ballina Town, who themselves were the subject of an upset in the cup last weekend when Westport United B turned them over on penalties.
On Saturday evening, Celtic will host Manulla in Celtic Park and win is essential for the Hoops if they are going to try and mount any sort of a challenge to try and reign in Westport United. Manulla won’t be fazed by meeting their near neighbours and have had a very good start to the season themselves, sitting in third place with two wins, two draws, and just one defeat from their five games so far.
On Sunday Ballyheane will hope to start a new undefeated run when they host Fahy Rovers in Quigley Park. It has been an eventful season so far for the Ballyheane boys with an early doors change in management, giving them a few things to change around that they could have done without. Fahy Rovers have one win to their name so far and will fancy taking points from Ballyheane on Sunday as they try to pull themselves into the middle of the table.
Ballina Town are now trailing Westport United at the top of the table by five points, and on Sunday they will make the short trip to east Mayo to try to take home a win against Charlestown Athletic. The defending Super League champions were give a rude awakening last weekend when Westport United B beat them 3-1 on penalties after a 3-3 draw in Belleek in the cup, and they will be looking to bounce back very quickly on Sunday afternoon.
