‘Bik’ McFarlane for Ballina show

Brendan ‘Bik’ McFarlane is to speak and perform in Ballina on Thursday next (May 29 ).

Mr McFarlane was involved in some of the most dramatic events in the history of the Troubles in Northern Ireland.

He took over from Bobby Sands as the leader of the republican prisoners in the H-Block during the 1981 hunger strikes and he also headed-up a mass jail break of prisoners there in 1983.

He is in the north Mayo capital on Thursday for the staging of 1981 in the Ballina Arts Centre at 8pm.

1981 is an acclaimed one-man-play by writer, actor, and director Tony Devlin of Brass Neck Theatre, in which Devlin delivers a powerful performance as each of the 10 hunger strikers who died over 70 gruelling days in the summer of 1981.

Mr McFarlane will lead a question and answer session following the performance of the play.

Mr McFarlane will also give a musical performance in the Ballina Manor Hotel on the same evening.
