Major work begins on Rossport water scheme

Work has started on the Shell funded €750,000 upgrade of the Rossport Group Water Scheme (RGWS ) which is being funded by Shell Exploration & Production (Ireland ) Limited (SEPIL ).

The contract for the work was won by local civil engineering contractors, Peter Winters Plant Hire Limited. The water scheme will benefit more than 150 locals and involves an eight-kilometre stretch of mains.

It will involve 92 connections including domestic, non-domestic, and agricultural connections.

The upgrade was first mooted about three years ago, when deficiencies in the existing scheme were identified. The supply source remains the same. Included in the works are a new reservoir and treatment facility. Planning of the scheme was undertaken by RPS.

Tony Corduff, chairman of the Rossport Group Water Scheme Co-operative Society, welcomed the appointment of a local contractor.

“The co-operative had been unsuccessful in its application to Mayo County Council for funding and we are pleased that Shell has come up with the necessary funding,” he said. “We look forward to the works being completed this year and, hopefully, there will be no further leaks or disruption in the water supply to our community.”
