Man’s car seized while driving pregnant wife to hospital for birth

A 19-year-old man, who was bringing his wife to hospital to give birth, was stopped by gardaí along the way and his car seized for having no tax, insurance, or NCT.

Bernard McDonagh, 136 Greenhills Estate, Ballina, came before the District Court this week.

Garda John Barrett told Judge Mary Devins how gardaí brought McDonagh and his wife back to his parents’ house. They were then transferred to hospital by ambulance, where his wife gave birth the next day.

Judge Mary Devins said there were definitely ‘exceptional circumstances’ at play and McDonagh avoided a driving disqualification.

The judge fined McDonagh €200 for driving without insurance and took the other charges for no NCT, no tax and non-display of an insurance disc, into consideration.
