Kiltane GAA club are priming with confidence ahead of the National Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta Finals in Moycullen over the June Bank Holiday weekend after the clubs double success at the Mayo Comórtas Finals held recently on Achill Island. The Bangor club strode to victory over Kilcommon in the Mayo Senior final on a score line of 4-12 to 1-08 with man of the match Ultan Corrigan, Barry Mc Andrew and Tommy Conroy all finding the net over the hour.
In the Junior Comórtas final Kiltane had to dig deep to hold off a very spirited effort from the host club Achill to reach the national finals. At the finish there was only one point between the sides with Kiltane winning by the slimmest of margins 0-09 to 0-08. Speaking after the finals, Kiltane club chairperson Paul Gallagher said he was thrilled that the club had started the season in such good form. “2013 was a hectic year for Kiltane GAA club after reaching the All-Ireland Intermediate club Final at Croke Park and we really didn’t know how the lads would reaction, but we got our answer in Achill,” he said. Gallagher said that the club would be focusing heavily now on the National Comórtas Finals in Moycullen.
“It is unreal to have over forty players now getting competitive football at one of the most prestigious GAA tournaments in the country. There is great excitement in every house in the parish and with both teams competing we will also have a big following heading to Moycullen that weekend,” he said. Kiltane have reached the last two National Comórtas Finals however they have failed to bring home the silverware on either occasion. Commenting on the National finals, Mayo GAA Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta Chairperson Piaras Ó Raghallaigh wished Kiltane well, stating to represent the county at the event was a great honour.
“Some of the best GAA players in the country will be in Moycullen for the Comórtas Finals including Donegal’s Neil and Eamon McGee, Meath’s Graham Geraghty and Kerry’s Marc O’Se so it is the perfect GAA platform to put the Kiltane club back on the national stage,” he said. Commenting on the Mayo Finals, O’Raghallaigh said, CLG Acla deserved great credit for hosting the event this year. “Despite the inclement weather the entire weekend was extremely well organised by the club and everyone came away with great praise for CLG Acla after the warm welcome they received over the two days,” he said.
