A local election candidate has slated the Government’s record in rural Ireland.
Lisa Chambers, who is running for Fianna Fáil in the Castlebar area, accused the Government of systematically dismantling services and failing to deliver in rural Mayo.
“You cannot help but notice that Mayo is being closed down piece by piece,” she said. “This is not a sensationalist statement, you need only look at the facts. Closure of Garda stations, loss of rural schoolteachers, threat to rural post offices with many closures, closure of courthouses, closure of 20 community welfare offices, the threat to downgrade Mayo General Hospital, and the lack of ambulance cover for the county with an empty base in Mulranny.”
Ms Chambers said the Government has delivered consistently “anti-rural policies”.
“This Government has hit Mayo hard and we are seeing the effects all over with the closure of long standing family businesses, mass emigration, and increasing unemployment figures for Mayo,” she hit out. “We hear about green shoots and a drop in the live register, this may be the case for the large urban centers such as Dublin, Limerick and Cork, but we are not seeing improvements here in Mayo.
“A huge expectation was created by Fine Gael in the 2011 General Election that there would be delivery for Mayo and we would be well
looked after, this has simply not happened and the county has been left behind in terms of recovery.”
