The solictor of a 14-year-old Bohola girl with cerebral palsy, who secured a €1.5 million settlement this week, has described his client as “immensely brave and couragous”.
Mary Malee was awarded the interim settlement, which was made without admission of liability, in her action over alleged negligence in her birth at Mayo General Hospital.
Ms Malee made a statement in the high court in which she said she would have appreciated an apology from the HSE and Mayo General Hospital.
“This shouldn’t have happened to me and others like me,” she said.
Solicitor for Ms Malee, Michael Boylan, in an interview with RTÉ news following the interim settlement, said the Malee family were relieved after their long struggle.
“Proceedings began two years ago, liability was disputed, it remained in dispute,” said Mr Boylan. “But it’s a good settlement and the family are really happy that Mary’s future is secured now.”
He said Ms Malee’s decision to read out a statement in court was “a really brave thing to do”.
“She’s a remarkable young woman. You just have to focus on he abilities rather than her disabilities and she’s proved today how brave and couragous she’s been.”
