At a time when business closures in Castlebar have dominated local media, it comes as welcome news that a new chartered physiotherapy practice has just opened in the town.
David Ukich, a native of Perth, Western Australia, and married to Darina Kilroy from Claremorris, has opened his new business at 1 Humbert Mall, Castle Street Car Park, Castlebar.
David is reversing the trend of many Irish going to Australia to find work. Instead, the Australian chartered physiotherapist and his wife have opted to raise their three young daughters in Mayo and set-up a new business to accommodate the growing demand for specialist chartered physiotherapy.
David has been a chartered physiotherapist for the past 22 years, and has practiced in his native Australia, the USA, Norway and Ireland. As a chartered physiotherapist, his qualifications are recognised worldwide.
Prior to moving to Mayo, he worked at the renowned Dublin Spine and Sports Physiotherapy Clinic, as well as with the Trinity College Rugby Academy, with whom he is still actively involved.
Aside from his clinician role, David also assists with the prestigious Masters in Sports and Exercise Medicine post graduate course at Trinity College, being a guest lecturer and external examiner. He acts as a mentor to chartered physiotherapists and doctors looking to further their careers in sports medicine.
Commenting on the opening of his new business in Castlebar, David said he was delighted to be open for business and to offer people around Co. Mayo his services.
“It's wonderful to be open, and I look forward to practising professionally here in Mayo. I specialise in all musculoskeletal conditions/injuries and chronic pain, and I combine the most recent evidence based treatments with old fashioned common sense.
“I have also worked with a wide variety of sporting teams, from the club level through to the international stage. My treatments are very much hands on, and I place a heavy emphasis on patient education, helping to explain away the many myths concerning common injuries and pain conditions.”
Joining David in the physiotherapy practice is Mark McEllin from Kiltimagh, who previously worked in private practice and as chartered physiotherapist to a number of different sports teams including Trinity College GAA Club.
Mark is currently completing his Masters in Sports and Exercise Medicine at Trinity College Dublin and will be taking up a position as lead physiotherapist at this year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
The Kiltimagh-native is also a qualified musculoskeletal ultrasonographer, combining the latest in diagnostic ultrasound imaging with his diploma in Musculoskeletal Medicine, and certificate in Orthopaedic Manual Therapy, to provide a more comprehensive physiotherapy assessment allowing a more targeted, evidence-based, method of treatment.
He too adopts a very hands-on, whole-body approach to restoring pain-free movement and uses the latest evidence to help the patient maintain better function for a happier, healthier life.
The new Chartered Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Clinic is located at 1 Humbert Mall, Castle Street Car Park, Castlebar.
