Top award for Castlebar musician

A Castlebar musician and composer has won a prestigious TG4 Traditional Music Award.

Emer Mayock won the Gradam Ceoil TG4 2014 award for musical collaboration alongside Mick O’Brien and daughter Aoife Ní Bhriain on a CD which revives a collection of Irish melodies compiled in the 1860s by flute player and piper Canon James Goodman.

Ms Mayock was in University Concert Hall in Limerick last weekend to collect the award.

The awards night showcased some of the best of Irish traditional musicians in the country.

Other winners on the night were flute-player Harry Bradley, who picked up the Musician of the Year award, Clare concertina veteran Chris Droney who won the Hall of Fame award and Connemara sean-nós singer Nan Tom Taimín de Búrca who was named Singer of the Year.

The awards concert will be broadcast on TG4 this Sunday at 9.30 pm.
