Just a day after Claremorris became Ireland’s first ‘fibre town’ with the launch by An Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Minister for Communications Pat Rabbitte of a €500,000 investment in broadband infrastructure in the town, which sees the construction of a Fibre to the Business network (FFTB ), there was more good news for Claremorris today.
Minister for State at the Department of Transport, Tourism, and Sport Michael Ring has announced that Claremorris is set to be designated one of Ireland’s ‘Active Travel Towns.’ The initiative sees nine Irish towns granted funding for local cycling and walking strategies, including new cycle-lanes, provision of walkways, and behavioural change initiatives in local schools and workplaces to encourage people to switch their transport mode. Mayo County Council is to receive €431,000 for Claremorris.
“This represents a major investment in Claremorris and is great news for the town. In the first instance, jobs will be created during the construction of this infrastructure. Secondly, it will significantly improve cycling facilities for commuters and families alike. Cycling has a huge role to play in people’s quality of life and I am delighted to be able to announce this funding for Claremorris,” Minister Ring said.
