Winter leagues comes to the crunch in Castlebar

Balla

Michael Neary was the winner of the gents’ competition last weekend in Balla with a score of 37pts. Neary’s back-nine play saw him hold off Enda Holian in second place and Pat Walsh finished in third place. The ladies’ competition was won by Patricia Conwell who scored 35pts, Breege Moran finished in second place and Julie Loftus came home in third place.

Ballinrobe

Last weekend’s competition was sponsored by Ballinrobe Racecourse and the gents section was claimed by Eamon Higgins who scored 38pts. Ian Reilly finished in second place with Declan Flaherty in third spot, with the gross prize won by Aaron D’Arcy. The ladies’ competition was won by Ann Treacy who scored 38pts, with the Cat 1 win going to Shannon Burke, the Cat 2 to Breege Costello, and the Cat 3 to Mary Colleran. Anne Galvin and Shannon Burke from Ballinrobe won the Daily Mail club competition in Tuam last week. On Thursday April 10 at 7pm in Ballinrobe Golf Club clubhouse there will be an introduction evening for ladies interested in taking up golf.

Ballyhaunis

In the Transzone sponsored competition last weekend the gents’ event was won by John Doyle with a score of 42pts, second place went to Patsy Glynn who finished one point behind. The ladies’ competition was won by Phil Glynn who saw off Siobhan Herr in second place by a single point also, with Glynn finishing on 39pts.

Castlebar

The final of the Men’s Winter League took place last Sunday. The winners with a great score of 95pts were Mick Byrne’s team. Byrne’s team consisted of himself along with Paul Doyle, Stephen Munnelly, and Peter Horkan. In a poignant speech to a packed clubhouse the men dedicated their win to former team member and stalworth club member Padraig Hurst who sadly passed away earlier this year. David Molloy's team were second, also with 95 only beaten after a count back. Frank Murray's team were third with 94, Martin Newcombe’s team were fourth also with 94, and the teams of club captain Paul Kilcourse (93 ) and John Mitchell (93 ) were fifth and sixth respectively.

The Ladies’ Spring league final was also decided last Sunday, with Kathleen Sweeney’s team winning the final round, Martina Kelly’s side finishing in second place in the last round, and Fiona O’Healy’s time came home in third place. Overall best individual scores for eight rounds were Ann Gallagher and Mary McKeon both on 207 points.

Claremorris

Last weekend’s Peter Killeen/Sam’s Bar sponsored competition was won by Alan Ferrick with a score of 41pts, Pat Connaughton finished in second place one point further back and Martin Gallagher was the category winner. The ladies’ front nine competition was won by Yvonne Oldham, and Norah Maloney won the back nine competition.

Westport

The Westport gents’ 15 hole stableford competition was won by Frank Hastings who scored 36pts playing off a handicap of 13. Second place went to Hugh Golden who finished one point behind Hastings.
