€1,000 trip from prison to answer €40 theft

A man was transported from prison in Dublin to Castlebar District Court, at what Judge Mary Devins estimated to be a cost of up to €1,000 to the State, to answer a theft charge relating to goods valued at €40 this week.

Judge Mary Devins described the situation as “farcical nonsense”.

Martin Stokes, 13, Castlegrove West, Castlebar, was on remand in custody relating to seperate matters. He pleaded guilty to taking car seat covers valued at €29.99 and car mats valued at €9.99 from Super Savers, Castlebar, on September 19 last.

Judge Devins said the transportation costs for the State to bring the defedant to Castlebar from the Dublin prison was likely to have cost up to €1,000.

The judge heard Stokes was homeless at the time of the offence. He was put under pressure by others to carry out the theft.

She imposed a one-month prison sentence backdated to January 1, 2014.
