The Department of Environment and Local Government announced recently that €6.39 million has been allocated to Mayo so far to cover the cost of repairs to public infrastructure in the county after the early new year storm damage.
Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring TD said after the announcement that “I am pleased that this funding has been allocated to allow the council to commence the repair works needed. There was a lot of damage in Mayo during the recent severe weather and this will enable the council to make a start on the necessary works.”
John O'Mahony TD welcoming the allocation said that, “This funding is of vital importance to so many areas throughout the county that have been so badly affected by the damage from the severe weather. The entire county has taken an awful battering in recent weeks and the damage has to be seen to be believed.”
Minister of State Ring also said that funding for coastal protection works and improvements was not included in this first tranch of funding, but is being assessed at present. “Funding of new coastal protection works have been separated from the requests submitted to the Department of Environment and forwarded to the OPW for consideration. I understand that funding towards piers and harbour, under the Fishery Harbour and Coastal Infrastructure Development Programme is due to be announced in the next few weeks,” he said.
