Call to taxis for St. Patrick's Day campaign

Taxi drivers in Mayo are being called to take part in a road safety campaign ahead of St. Patrick's Day celebrations.

The county's road safety officer Noel Gibbons is asking taxi drivers to email, text or post their contact details on Facebook to make sure there's no excuse for people to drink and drive or for pedestrians who have over-indulged to put themselves and others at risk by walking home over St. Patrick's weekend.

Mr Gibbons said accident and emergency departments across the country report a huge increase in the number of admissions on St. Patrick's Day.

“A high percentage of these are pedestrians who have fallen after over indulging in alcohol. These pedestrians are not alone putting themselves at risk when using the streets and roads but other road users also,” he said.

Recent figures released by the Western Garda Region showed a small number of people are still drinking and driving, with 12 arrests in Mayo in January.
