Westport groups urged to apply for amenity grant

Community groups in Westport have one last opportunity to apply for funding under the amenity grants scheme operated by Westport Town Council.

Under the 2013 scheme, some €40,500 was allocated to 39 community groups.

Applications are now being sought for the 2014 scheme.

Councillor Tereasa McGuire, Fine Gael's Mayo County Council election candidate in West Mayo, said the abolition of the town council in May will spell the end of the amenity grants so this is the last chance for local groups to make an application.

“Over the years, the town council has supported many community groups, from Tidy Towns to local sports clubs, through the amenity grants. This support has made a huge difference to the survival and focus of many groups.

“This is the last time town councillors will be able to allocate such funding so I would urge groups to get their applications in now,” she added.

Interested organisations are invited to attend an information evening on Thursday, March 6.
