Balla
Lorcan Cribbin was the winner of the stableford competition last weekend with a score of 35pts. His back nine play held off Mick Mellett in second place and John Parsons finished a point further back in third place. In the ladies’ competition, Aine McSuibhne was the winner with Breege Moran second and Kitty O’Connor third.
Ballina
The foursome of Colm McLoughlin, Joe Cox, Elenor Loftus, and Sean Sweeney were the winners of day two in the Spring League in Ballina. They finished with a score of 100pts, four in front of the second placed team of Des Sweeney, Siobhan Leonard, Seamus Mulchrone, and John Irwin. The Spring League is well under way, but there are still places available for the free beginner golf lessons starting in March, contact the club for more details.
Ballinrobe
The overall winners of the Ladies Winter League were Aine Melville, Carmel Sweeney, Marie Burke, and Mary Costello. Last weekend’s winners were the foursome of Anne Galvin, Breege Costello, Eileen Comer, and Chris Moran with a score of 57pts.
Castlebar
The penultimate round of the Men’s Winter League took place over the last weekend with teams attempting to qualify for a much coveted grand final slot. The February monthly winners with a great score of 83pts were David Molloy’s team. Tom Cresham’s team were a close second with 82pts.
As both these teams have already qualified from previous results the grand final qualifiers for February are Padraig Rice 81pts, Mick Kilcourse 81pts, Charlie Muldoon 81pts, and Martin Newcombe 80pts. The best singles score over the weekend was from the big hitting left-hander Frank Starken with a super 35pts. There is still a chance for teams to qualify, with the last round of the league to be played over the weekend of March 8 and 9, and there will also be a final chance for remaining teams in the pre-qualifier on Saturday March 22 before the grand final on Sunday March 23.
In the ladies’ section there was a 13 hole stableford competition where 28pts was the magic score with Ann Gallagher emerging the winner from Mary McHale in second and Kate Killelea in third, all three ladies scoring 28pts with positions being decided on count-backs. Castlebar will also host a four-ball-better-ball competitoin over the weekend of March 6 to 9 as a fundraiser for Peter Horkan and Tena O’Doherty who are taking part in a Strictly Come Dancing event. Entry is €10 for members and €15 for visitors.
Westport
There was no gents’ competition played last weekend. Winter League golfers are reminded to have their outstanding matchplay ties played on or before Sunday March 9. There will be a 15 hole stableford competition this weekend weather permitting.
The Westport ladies club had a very successful outing to Rosses Point last Saturday. Winners on the day were team of Marie Grimes, Maureen Griffin, and Josephine Mc Greal. The captains drive in will be held on Sunday March 9, captain Joe Carty and lady captain Maeve O’Farrell invite all members to join them on first tee at 12.30pm. Seniors golf will be re commencing on first Thursday in March,
