Europe Matters event

On Thursday March 6 South West Mayo Development Company, in conjunction with Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology, is holding a seminar Europe Matters in the Castlebar campus of GMIT. Funded by Department of An Taoiseach under the Communicating Europe Initiative, as well as Mayo County Council, this half-day seminar is an opportunity to examine and reflect on the role of citizens in influencing the EU. The internationally renowned line-up of speakers includes Anastasia Crickley, the first chair of the EU Fundamental Rights Agency; Dr Will Dinan from the University of the West of Scotland and co-founder of www.spinwatch.org; Kieran Clifford from Amnesty International; and Paul Ginnell from the European Anti-Poverty Network (Ireland ).

“This seminar is one of a range of projects that SWMDC carries out to promote active and meaningful citizenship,” stated Maria McHale, community development officer, SWMDC. “Europe Matters is especially timely, given that the European elections are fast approaching in May.” Clodagh Geraghty, GMIT, added: “GMIT is delighted to host this event and the seminar promises to be challenging, engaging, and highly relevant to anyone which wishes to have their voice heard at European level.”
