Ballina talent has it ‘covered’ in song contest

Ballina talent is shining brightly in a national hunt to find the country’s best cover version song.

Two entries from local acts, four-piece group Flat out, and 22-year-old Katie Cassidy, have made it into the top 10 in the Today FM and Le Crunch Apple of My Eye Song Contest 2014.

The contest saw almost 1,000 artists from across Ireland submit a video of themselves performing their favourite cover version song.

Just 10 semi-finalists made it through and they were announced on Today FM’s KC show earlier this week.

Flat Out’s version of ‘Pumped Up Kicks’ by Foster The People secured them their semi-final place while for Cassidy, it was ‘99 Red Balloons’, an 80s pop classic from German band Nena.

A public vote will now whittle it down to five acts, who will go on to perform in the national final in popular Dublin venue, The Sugar Club, on March 7. The final will be broadcast live to 150,000 listeners on The KC Show.

The Mayo public can help these two acts get to the next stage of the competition by voting at www.ouitolacrunch.com
