The National Theatre’s multi-award-winning production of War Horse, seen by more than four million people worldwide since its premiere at the National Theatre in 2007, will be broadcast live to Mayo Movie World from its home at the New London Theatre in the West End on Thursday February 27, as part of National Theatre Live.
Based on the novel by Michael Morpurgo, War Horse is the powerful story of a young boy called Albert and his beloved horse, Joey, who has been requisitioned to fight for the British in World War I. Caught in enemy crossfire, Joey ends up serving on both sides during the war before landing in No Man’s Land, while Albert, not old enough to enlist, embarks on a treacherous mission to find his horse and bring him home.
A remarkable tale of courage, loyalty, and friendship, War Horse features ground-breaking puppetry work by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company, which brings breathing and galloping horses to life on stage.
The Sunday Express says it’s “absolutely guaranteed to move the heart”.
The broadway production of War Horse, which completed its run at the Lincoln Center’s Vivian Beaumont Theatre early in 2013, was the winner of six Tony Awards including a Special Tony Award for Handspring Puppet Company.
Innovative opera
Mayo Movie World will screen one of Britain’s most significant operas - Benjamin Britten’s Peter Grimes - as performed by the English National Opera and broadcast live from the London Coliseum stage in stunning cinematic high definition on Sunday, February 23, at 3pm.
This marks the cinema debut for the English National Opera and ‘ENO Screen’ - ENO’s cinema programme – and will therefore allow innovative opera to be accessible to local audiences.
This is the first revival of director David Alden’s 2009 five-star, sell-out, production. ENO music director Edward Gardner conducts Britten’s electrifying score, with Stuart Skelton, described as the ‘definitive’ Peter Grimes, returning to the title role.
Critics also rave about the new production; with the London Evening Standard hailing it “a shattering evening of music theatre” while The Observer calls it “unmissable”.
Featuring some of the most powerful and evocative music ever written, Peter Grimes paints a vivid picture of a small community’s descent into suspicion, gossip, and mob mentality in the face of a tragedy. What really happened to fisherman Peter Grimes’s missing apprentice, and was he involved? As the townspeople’s mistrust grows, Grimes spirals into a downfall with devastating consequences.
Tickets for ENO: Peter Grimes (LIVE ) are priced €15.00.
