Vicious insults scrawled on shopper’s car

A woman who was visiting friends and family in Castlebar last weekend was left shaken and shocked when vicious slurs were etched across her car with a sharp implement in broad daylight in a busy carpark.

The woman, who did not want to be named, is from Mayo but lives outside the county. She regularly visits friends and family here and was enjoying a day of shopping with her daughter in the busy Quarter Shopping area of the town.

When she returned to her car, a number of insults such as ‘Irish b**ch’ had been etched across the side of the vehicle, on the roof, and other damage caused by long scrapes along the paintwork.

“I can’t understand why someone would do that,” she told the Mayo Advertiser. “It was very vicious. The gardaí couldn’t believe it either. I have no idea what it was about. I was just shopping, minding my own business, and then someone goes and does that to you. It was horrible.”

The vandals caused around €1,000 in damage.

Gardaí confirmed they are investigatng the incident, which took place between 2.30 and 3.15pm on Saturday, February 1.

They are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the vandalism, or has any information about it, to contact Castlebar gardaí on 094 9022222.
