Candlelight walk for positive mental health

A 'Walk of Light' to promote positive mental health and suicide prevention is taking place in Ballina this evening (Friday ).

The walk is organised by local alliance Choose Life Reach Out, which was formed in the Ballina area in 2002 to promote suicide prevention and raise awareness about mental health supports and services.

Organisers are hoping the walk will let people know about all of the support services available to them and it will also be an opportunity to share information and tips on maintaining positive mental health.

Speaking on behalf of the Choose Life Reach Out Alliance, chairperson Liz McHale said huge effort and teamwork had gone into organising the event.

“We are expecting a large turnout in the afternoon and evening as we know the messages of hope and light are very important to the people in the wider community,” she said.

A manned information stand on mental health support services will also be set-up at Dunnes Stores, Ballina, on the same day from 12 noon to 7pm.

Ballina Soroptimists is supporting the event. Ballina Mens Shed has designed a 'Wall of Hope', where the public can share in writing ideas about keeping well in difficult times.

The Walk of Light starts at AIB carpark, Pearse Street, at 6.30pm.
