Maths whiz Aoibhinn Ní Shúilleabháin encouraging children to embrace science

Carnacon native Aoibhinn Ní Shúilleabháin has joined a panel of top scientists to help get the nation’s children interested in science and maths.

Ms Ní Shúilleabháin is a new ambassador for Science Foundation Ireland’s Discover Primary Science and Maths Awards, which encourages primary schools to undertake a series of science tasks and challenges and win an award for their work.

Ms Ní Shúilleabháin is probably best known for her television presenting work and as a former Rose of Tralee winner.

But in terms of brain power, Ms Ní Shúilleabháin would not look all that out of place on the set of The Big Bang Theory.

She holds a degree in theoretical physics and is currently studying for a PhD from Trinity College Dublin.

She said she was “delighted” to be included on the panel of scientists who will visit schools in a bid to capture the imagination of the nation’s primary pupils when it comes to maths and science.

“The awards offer schools a fantastic opportunity to spark children’s interest in science and maths at an early age, and that is something which will hopefully enthuse them to engage with science as they grow older,” said Ms Ní Shúilleabháin.

“The Discover Science Excellence Squad is looking forward to seeing firsthand some of the great work that teachers and students are doing and we're also looking forward to sharing our own stories with pupils and teachers.”
