Ulster boxers take the honours in Swinford

The visiting boxers from Ulster took the majority of the contests in the inter-provincal tournament held in the Conway Gym and Fitness Centre in Swinford last Friday night. The opening four contests on the night involved eight Mayo boxers as support bouts for the main contests. The best contest of the night was awarded to the meeting of Vicky Harraghy (Swinford/Connacht ) and Grainne Gallagher (Twin Towns/Ulster ) with the visiting girl taking the girl two, 46kg contest 3-0. There were wins on the night for Chloe Moore (Swinford/Connacht ) in the girl two 42kg grade, Shannon Sweeney (St Anne’s/Connacht ), and Aoife Hennigan (Swinford/Connacht ) in the intermediate 63kg grade.

In the Eagle Club tournament last Saturday, there was a full card with 13 bouts down for decision. The best young boxers’ awards on the night saw the Halpin Trophy go to Willie Maughan (Eagle ) and the Gannon Trophy went to James Collins (Eagle ). There were wins on the night for Fionn Gill (Ardaree ), Patrick McDonagh (Geesala ), William Maughan (Eagle ), Jason Collins (Eagle ), Lauren Padden (Golden Gloves ), Mark Reynolds (Ardnaree ), Darren Munroe (Aglish ), Nuala Connolly (Aglish ), Matthew McDonagh (Geesala ), Bernard Ward (Eagle ), Colin Masterson (Achill ), and John Gerard Lawrence (Eagle ).

Knockmore/Foxford boxers won seven out of the 15 bouts down for decision in the Vincy James Memorial tournament last Sunday afternoon in the Foxford Sports and Leisure Centre. Boy two Cian Timlin was awarded best boxer and lifted the Vincy James Cup. On the day there were wins for Diarmuid Brogan (Knockmore/Foxford ), Jack McHale (Knockmore/Foxford ), Ewan O’Grady (Swinford ), Cian Timlin (Knockmore/Foxford ), Anthony Gallagher (Knockmore/Foxford ), Timmy Fitzmaurice (Loughlynn ), Ann-Lisa Sweeney (Charlestown ), Michal Kolasinski (Knockmore/Foxford ), Jamie Lunty (Loughlynn ), Martin McDonagh (Ballina ), Aidan Gaughan (Knockmore/Foxford ), Ruaidhri O’Sullivan (Achill ), Renee Roche (Castlebar ), Hayleigh Murphy (Knockmore/Foxford ), and Eamon Kelly (Castlebar ). There are two tournaments this weekend, the first taking place tonight in the Bekan Community Centre is being run by Ballyhaunis BC, the second is on Sunday, February 2 in the Ballina boxing club gym.
