Mayo knitters needed for shamrock project

Avid Mayo stitchers are being asked to get their needles out and knit a shamrock for Age Action Ireland.

The charity promotes positive ageing and better services for older people and is hoping to raise funds by selling 20,000 hand-knitted shamrocks at retail outlets across the country this St Patrick’s Day.

“We need the public to get behind us, by either knitting some of the Age Action shamrock badges or purchasing them when they go on sale,” says the charity’s fundraiser Daragh Matthews.

“The response to date has been fantastic with almost 2,000 of the specially knitted badges already produced.”

Knitting enthusiasts in day care centres, nursing homes, knitting clubs, and individuals all over Ireland are knitting to get the shamrocks ready to go on sale for March 1.

Funds raised will go towards Age Action’s home visitation and DIY service, computer training programme for older people, and information service.

Copies of the shamrock knitting patterns can be downloaded by visiting www.ageaction.ie They can also be ordered by phoning 01 4756989.

Completed badges should be sent to Age Action at 30/31 Lower Camden Street, Dublin 2, by February 25.
