Sinn Fein county councillor Gerry Murray has said that Fianna Fail and Fine Gael have no credibility when it comes to the issue of Irish Water. He said the sad reality is that both parties are the main architects of the current Irish Water debacle. Fianna Fail in government should never have signed up to the establishment of Irish Water with the Trokia, it could easily have cited any number of legitimate reasons for not doing so. Fine Gael and Labour could have also refused to implement the FF/Trokia agreement for the same reasons. But all three parties conceded to go down the route of privatisation with no regard for the consequences that this would have for ordinary citizens, and the objective of delivering balanced regional development.
