Detailed investigation into Castlebar shooting continues

The investigation is continuing into the the shooting of Owen Maughan at a Castlebar filling station in December.

Inspector Damien Ó’Flannagáin told a meeting of the Castlebar Joint Policing Committee this week that he was unable to give any further comment on the investigation other than that it is “detailed and ongoing” and gardaí are hopeful of progress.

Castlebar Town Council's Cllr Michael Kilcoyne said there was “serious concern” about the murder, which occurred in the middle of the afternoon on December 18.

“That someone could drive into town on a foggy, wet afternoon and just take someone out and then disappear into the fog again, it's a concern,” he said.

Owen Maughan was shot three times on the busy forecourt of Top Oil, Moneen, at 3.30 pm on December 18. He died in hospital later that night.

No arrests have been made in relation to the shooting.

On December 30, gardaí issued a renewed appeal for witnesses and information, this time specifying a graphite grey 3.3 litre diesel BMW 330 touring car, which is believed to have sped off in the direction of Balla after the shooting.
