Mayo County Council and Castlebar Town Council have produced a new information leaflet with guidelines for pedestrians and motorists when it comes to ‘courtesy crossings’.
In recent years, Castlebar has introduced a number of courtesy crossings at busy town centre locations.
Unlike zebra crossings, where motorists must yield to pedestrians, motorists are merely encouraged to yield to pedestrians as a matter of courtesy at the new crossings.
Cllr Ger Deere said he recently witnessed a driver beeping as an elderly woman used a courtesy crossing.
At a recent joint policing committee meeting, he asked that the new information leaflets be widely distributed, particularly in tourism offices to alert visitors that courtesy crossings are in operation.
