Mayo groups hoping for national gongs at LAMA awards

Mayo will feature strongly at a national awards ceremony in Dublin tomorrow (Saturday ), which celebrates exceptional community and council projects.

The LAMA Community and Council Awards 2014 will be hosted by RTÉ’s Miriam O’Callaghan.

Projects and initiatives from Mayo are firmly in the spotlight after being shortlisted for prestigous awards across a whopping 10 categories.

Included in those hoping to come out tops at tomorrow’s ceremony is the organsing committee of In Humbert’s Footsteps, the historical reenactment last summer on the streets of Castlebar of the French invasion of Ireland in 1798.

The hugely successful event is nominated in three different categories, for Gathering Event of the Year, Best Heritage Project, and Best Tourism Initiative.

Castlebar Tennis Club is also a finalist for Local Sports Club of the Year. Mayo County Council’s Geneographic Project is in the running for a Best Connected Community Award.

The Kilmeena Group Water Scheme and Kilmeena National School are shorlisted for their efforts to improve water quality and also for a Best Energy Smart Initiative award.

Inishturk Island Spirit of Place is shortlisted twice, in the Best Tourism Initiative and Most Innovative Authority categories.

The West of Ireland Women’s Marathon is a finalist for the Best Community Based Initiative award.
